You might think that your cold storage wallet offers the same level of security as the devices you use to store your bitcoins but, they are the user interface of your seed and enable you to authorize bitcoin transactions using the keys manufactured by that seed. As with everything else, there are chances that something might go wrong. Your wallet can get stolen in a boating accident, destroyed in a fire, or even stolen in a $5 wrench attack. Wallets aren’t designed to last forever and there will come a time when they will need to be upgraded.

It is very important to ensure that your ledger hardware wallet is always up to date so that you can access the latest features that are added to the wallet. You can check your current version by tapping the Cog Wheel on the top right corner of the home screen and then on the “About Bitcoin.com wallet”. To update your hardware wallet, open the app store/play store and search for the Bitcoin.com wallet and click on update.

If you are using a Windows or Linux system, click on your OS from the wallet download page. You will then be re-directed to a GitHub page from where you can download the latest version. For Windows, you will have to download an additional zip file. Once that is done, extract the file.

If your trezor hardware wallet is stolen or misplaced, the first step you need to take is to transfer your private keys or funds to another wallet so that the thief or individual with malicious intent is unable to empty your crypto. To do this. You will need two things. Your seed or recovery phase and the 12–24-word password that you were given when you initially created your cryptocurrency wallet. You will also need to do this if your hardware wallet is damaged even though there is no risk of theft.

You can also use your seed phase to transfer all your crypto funds to another wallet before cloning it. If you don’t have a spare cold storage wallet, transferring your crypto to a reliable software wallet while you wait for your new wallet to arrive is also a good idea. Off course, you can buy multiple hardware wallets during your initial purchase so that you have a backup in case your original wallet is misplaced, damaged, or stolen.

If you prefer to store your crypto funds in a hardware wallet as opposed to a software wallet, you can always place an order for a new hardware wallet. Some wallet crypto wallet providers offer a free replacement while others don’t. Keep this in when purchasing your first cold storage wallet as replacing a wallet at full price can blow a hole in your budget
